A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” stated the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its duties in civilian projects. They were completed at an rapid pace, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent concerns over operational security.

- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.

Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was suggested while awaiting a full technical review. The party stated that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
