The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in prison, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.

This encompassed seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could enable a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

He said the demonstration would be so followers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."

Background on Conviction

The former president was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to assassinate Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the support of the army and air force commanders. His successor was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of his followers stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, Brasília.

The police stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The justices found that the protesters had been provoked by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, restore order and return him to office.

At the period, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the trial a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
